Meetings held: First Thursday of each month except May, June, July, August and December.
Time: 7:00 p.m. in the Parish Hall
Meetings begin with a devotion, prayer and singing, followed by a business and planning meeting and ends with a devotion, coffee/tea and a snack. The attendance at the monthly meetings is between 10 to 15. There is a wind-up dinner in June which is well attended by the women of the congregation and everyone enjoys an evening of Christian fellowship and fun. In December, the Dorcas Ladies host a Christmas Luncheon to show the congregation that their contributions and support are appreciated throughout each year. Bible Studies are co-ordinated by women in the society. Get well, sympathy cards and friendship cards are sent out on a regular basis.
The Dorcas Ladies Society supports Lutheran Community Care Centre through their various programs such as the Chaplaincy and Street Ministry, Camp Aurora, Lutheran Hour, Canadian Lutheran World Relief, Lutheran Bible Translators, LAMP Vacation Bible School, Faye Peterson Transition House, the hospitals, old folks home, etc. as well as Vacation Bible School at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church.
The Dorcas Society is involved in the following events:
Dorcas Society has been part of LWML-Canada since the Founding Convention in 1993 and prior to that as a member of International Lutheran Women's Missionary League (ILWML) since 1969. There are 5 Districts that make up LWML-Canada. Our Dorcas Society belong to the Ontario Sonset District.
A National Convention occurs every Triennium (July 2009 in Ottawa) with District Conventions taking place the following year also on a Triennium basis. There are workshops, Retreats, and Rallies on a District level throughout the Triennium.
At a Society level, we open Dorcas Society meetings with Devotions made available by LWML-Canada (some of the authors are from our very own congregation). We recite the League pledge before the business portion of our meetings, provide Women's Weekly Bible Studies, and distribute the Tapestry Magazine. We support the Mission Grants of both Ontario Sonset District and LWML-Canada with our Mitebox Offerings, and are actively engaged in Mission Service Projects at a local level ie. gathering items for LCCC Street Ministry, making lap robes and quilts for local institutions, etc. as well as kits for CLWR, (It's all in our annual report as well.)
Some of Dorcas women are active on different levels of LWML-Canada as well. It is an opportunity to not only grow in our faith but to share our God-given gifts with the Lutheran Church Canada at large with which LWML-Canada is directly involved.
